History of Breitling watches

Leon Breitling founded the company in 1884. From the very beginning Breitling were famous for chronographs with a technical twist including instruments for aviation

The Chronomat is famous for being the first watch to use a slide rule bezel, it was introduced 1942 and immediately became a hit with pilots. For general sale the watch became known as the Navitimer which remains an iconic design. A manually wound version of the watch named the Cosmonaute was even used in early space exploration as an alternative to the Nasa endorsed Omega Speedmaster ‘Moon watch’.

In 1972 Ernest Schneider took over and re-invigorated the company in the ‘digital’ age.

Today Breitling have a very wide range and a model to suit most tastes however it is the links with Aviation that remain most strong. Indeed many Pilots and adventurers owe their life today to the ingenious Breitling Emergency with its unique on board SOS transmitter
