History of Cartier watches

Louis-Francois Cartier founded Cartier in Paris 1847. The company quickly became famous for supplying the European Nobility. Cartier's son Alfred took over in 1874.

In 1904, the first wristwatches were developed when Louis Cartier met the Brazilian aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont, this was the birth of the Santos watch which is still a mainstay of the product line - now especially with the larger Santos 100 anniversary model.

In 1907 Edmond Jaeger (of Jaeger Le Coultre) agreed to supply watch movements to Cartier. Early Cartier watches can also be found with movements from Audemars-Piguet, Vacheron Constantin and Movado .

Cartier’s other iconic design the Tank Watch was released in 1917 and then in 1932 the Pasha model (made for the Pasha of Marrakesh) followed.

After Louis Cartier death in 1942 many feel that the company drifted until 1972, when new investors took over. At the helm the new CEO Alain Perrin was instrumental in developing the "Le Must" line which signaled a return to design form. This strength continued leaving Cartier in its current prestigious position.
