History of Panerai watches

Guido Panerai founded the company in around 1860s in Florence, Italy making a variety of precision instruments mainly based around the needs of the early ‘frogmen’ divers and instruments such as compasses.

The famous link with the Italian Navy was born in 1935 when Officine Panerai were commissioned to produce watches for use underwater that were easy to read. The first watches were actually released in 1938 with Rolex movements.

An important element was the luminosity of the dials under water. Initially Radium was used (hence the name Radiomir) however the high toxicity necessitated the move to the ‘Luminor’ material.

Following the end of the Second World War nothing really happened with the brand until 1993 when some models were produced for the collectors market. This attracted the attention of the Vendome group who bought the company in 1997 making ‘pre-Vendome’ models very collectable.

Even today the low production numbers of these watches when compared to say Rolex make Panerai very collectable with strong residual values.
