History of Patek Philippe watches

Count Antoine Norbert de Patek and Francois Czapek founded the Company in 1839. There were many name changes in the early days including Patek, Czapek & co. until 1845 when Jean Adrien Philippe joined but it still took until 1851 for the Patek Philippe brand to emerge.

A notable early customer was Queen Victoria other Patek Philippe customers included Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Charlotte Bronte and Tchaikovsky.

Patek Philippe are of course synonymous with their movement complications and the reputation really started with the 1867 the Paris Exhibition. Innovations such as a perpetual calendar, a repeater, and a chronograph with split-seconds blew the watch world away.

Charles and Jean Stern took over the company in 1932 and the company remains in the same family hands today.

As early as 1950 Patek Philippe saw the potential of Quartz technology and won several awards and patents. Patek Philippe now restrict Quartz movements to their Ladies watches and stick strongly to their chronometer roots.

Patek Philippe are widely regarded as the premier watchmaker today. The consistent auction results for pre-owned watches and enduring quality mean that whilst acquiring a Patek Philippe is not easy the rewards over time are more than worth it.
