History of Rolex watches
After submitting their first movement for testing in 1910 it became clear that he main challenges for the wrist watch would be water and dust proofing to enable greater accuracy and reliability. To solve these problems the famous Rolex screw crown and casebook mechanism were developed by Wilsdorf ie the genesis of the ‘Oyster’ concept
To convince potential customers watches were displayed in Shop windows in aquariums!? This theme was mirrored in worldwide advertising. The universal move to waterproof robust watches gave Wilsdorf a great competitive advantage and provided the springboard to future success.
An early Marketing opportunity arose when Mercedes Gleitze swam the English Channel wearing a Rolex Oyster which true to Wilsdorf’s word kept perfect time and waterproofness. Very quickly a large front page advertisement appeared in the Daily Mail proclaiming Rolex as "The Wonder Watch that Defies the Elements: Moisture Proof. Waterproof. Heat Proof. Vibration Proof. Cold Proof. Dust Proof.". These qualities were equally useful to Edmund Hillary when he climbed Everest wearing his Rolex.
The other great innovation that formed part of the Rolex foundation was the ‘Rotor’ which was developed in 1931. The self winding nature of the Rotor gave birth to the term ‘Perpetual’. The Brand then had its 2 strong attributes ie the waterproofing of an ‘Oyster’ and the ease of use of a ‘Perpetual’ movement
Based on these 2 core principles Rolex developed the following watches: -
1933 – Rolex Bubbleback
1945 – Rolex Datejust
1953 – Rolex Explorer
1953 – Rolex Turn-o-graph
1953 – Rolex Submariner
1954 – Rolex Milgauss
1954 – Rolex GMT Master
1956 – Rolex Day Date ‘President’
1960 – Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
1967 – Rolex Sea-Dweller
1970 – Rolex Oysterquartz
1992 – Rolex Yachtmaster
Developing so many popular models so quickly gave Rolex its premier position in the market. The genius of Rolex is not only the initial development but the very subtle design tweaks that keep this core product line up fresh over time.
Now registered as Montres Rolex S.A. the company enjoys a unique family trust lead corporate structure where an obsession with quality and longevity takes precedence over profits thus avoiding the pitfalls that have claimed other watch makers over time.
It is the timeless quality and robustness of the construction which mean that Rolex watches consistently have the best retained value of any pre-owned watches. A Rolex watch is a considerable commitment to buy in the first place but a fantastic and enjoyable investment over time.
