History of Rolex watches

When the company was first formed in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf it was originally called Wilsdorf & Davis (Wilsdorf’s Brother in Law). The main aim of the company was to develop smaller movements thus moving away from pocket watches and towards wrist watches. The company actually started in London not moving to Switzerland until after WW1.

After submitting their first movement for testing in 1910 it became clear that he main challenges for the wrist watch would be water and dust proofing to enable greater accuracy and reliability. To solve these problems the famous Rolex screw crown and casebook mechanism were developed by Wilsdorf ie the genesis of the ‘Oyster’ concept

To convince potential customers watches were displayed in Shop windows in aquariums!? This theme was mirrored in worldwide advertising. The universal move to waterproof robust watches gave Wilsdorf a great competitive advantage and provided the springboard to future success.

An early Marketing opportunity arose when Mercedes Gleitze swam the English Channel wearing a Rolex Oyster which true to Wilsdorf’s word kept perfect time and waterproofness. Very quickly a large front page advertisement appeared in the Daily Mail proclaiming Rolex as "The Wonder Watch that Defies the Elements: Moisture Proof. Waterproof. Heat Proof. Vibration Proof. Cold Proof. Dust Proof.". These qualities were equally useful to Edmund Hillary when he climbed Everest wearing his Rolex.

The other great innovation that formed part of the Rolex foundation was the ‘Rotor’ which was developed in 1931. The self winding nature of the Rotor gave birth to the term ‘Perpetual’. The Brand then had its 2 strong attributes ie the waterproofing of an ‘Oyster’ and the ease of use of a ‘Perpetual’ movement

Based on these 2 core principles Rolex developed the following watches: -

1953 – Rolex Explorer
1953 – Rolex Turn-o-graph
1953 – Rolex Submariner
1954 – Rolex Milgauss
1954 – Rolex GMT Master

1967 – Rolex Sea-Dweller
1970 – Rolex Oysterquartz
1992 – Rolex Yachtmaster

Developing so many popular models so quickly gave Rolex its premier position in the market. The genius of Rolex is not only the initial development but the very subtle design tweaks that keep this core product line up fresh over time.

Now registered as Montres Rolex S.A. the company enjoys a unique family trust lead corporate structure where an obsession with quality and longevity takes precedence over profits thus avoiding the pitfalls that have claimed other watch makers over time.
